Two men recently arrested in Buncombe County are facing federal drug trafficking charges after authorities seized about 1,400 pounds of marijuana from a Candler residence.

Jose Chavez, 31, of Candler, and Ely Ramirez-Sanchez, 28, of Canton both face charges in connection with what some are calling one of the area’s largest marijuana seizures.

During a traffic stop on Friday, March 7, officials seized about 40-pounds of marijuana from Ramirez-Sanchez’s vehicle. They found the dope in a cardboard box sitting in the back seat of the car. Later that day, officers executed a search warrant at Chavez’s home in Candler and seized another large amount of pot from in and around the residence.

According to reports, two trash bags filled with pot were found inside the home along with digital scales and plastic wrapping material. An additional 15 boxes containing 23 blocks of marijuana were found inside a trailer located on the property, along with a small rental truck where an additional 27 boxes and 111 blocks of marijuana were seized.
Officials said a total 1,4000 pounds were seized, with an estimated street value between $840,000 and $1.8 million.
